Abstract | Forest fires are a main problem in Mediterranean countries. From an unitemporal point of view, mapping burned areas is usually achieved by classifying a postfire Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) image. Frequent confusions between burnt vegetation and shadows are, however, observed. This study tries to improve the results obtained using NDVI images and conventional classifiers by combining the use of Spectral Mixture Analysis (SMA) with Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA). The proposed method applies OBIA to the fraction images obtained by unmixing an original image. In this work, the reflectivity products of the MODerate resolution Image Spectroradiometer (MODIS) were employed. The study area was Castilla y León (Spain). First, the endmembers (unburned vegetation, burned vegetation, and shade) were defined and unmixing was performed (Root Mean Square error < 1). Second, the burned vegetation fraction image was segmented and the segmented image was classified into burned/unburned. Finally, the Global Positioning System (GPS) perimeters of the burned areas were used as ground-truth to calculate the confusion matrix and measure the accuracy of the estimation. Results showed that both overall accuracy and Kappa index (K) had higher values when fraction images were used as input to OBIA (K=0.67 vs. K=0.59). We concluded that the combination of SMA and OBIA is a valid methodology to map burned areas in Mediterranean countries. |
